Last year, I miserably failed my reading challenge. I had planned to read 15 books that year, but I ended up reading only 6 books in a whole year. A black page in my History Book of Life. Well, this year I hope to repeat the Golden Age of 2012, where I read a stunning 21 books. Yes, that is a lot for me. An astonishing 7616 pages. This year, I intend to read at least 10 books, but the books I've planned to read are a lot longer than most books. For example, I'm currently reading The Way of Kings and A Dance of Dragons, which combined account for more than 2200 pages alone.

 

So I think I should be able to read at least 10 books, but I have challenged myself to read 15 books this year. I already read 2, so I don't think it will be much of a problem!

Normally I'm not the kind of person for writing reviews, and it's even rarer that I post a status update on a book. Well, this is a special occasion, because it's a special book.

I really, really liked it, except for the end. The last chapter 'Speaker of the Dead' could have been left out...

REVIEW IN DUTCH!

Iedereen keert op latere leeftijd wel eens terug naar de omgeving waar hij zijn jeugd heeft doorgebracht. Eenmaal daar, komen de herinneren binnenstromen en is nostalgie het enige wat je nog kan voelen. Of deze herinneringen positief of negatief zijn, is voor iedereen verschillend. Maar een jeugd zoals het hoofdpersonage in The Ocean at the End of the Lane heeft gehad, zullen weinig mensen meemaken.

Neil Gaiman is geen onbekende in de literatuur en veel van zijn boeken zijn lovend ontvangen, en vele zijn ook in het Nederlands vertaald. The Ocean at the End of the Lane past ook in dit rijtje, maar tot nu toe is er nog niets bekend over een Nederlandse vertaling. Het verhaal was in eerste instantie bedoelt als kort verhaal, maar is uitgegroeid tot een volwaardig novelle. Nou ja, volwaardig... Het is eerder een boekje dan een boek, want de hardcover telt enkel 198 bladzijdes. Dit doet gelukkig niets af aan het verhaal.

Het naamloze hoofdpersonage keert in zijn veertiger jaren terug naar de laan waar hij de eerste twaalf jaar van zijn leven gewoond heeft. Het ouderlijk huis waar hij woonde is al jaren geleden afgebroken. Maar aan het einde van de laan staat nog een huis wat hij zich kan herinneren. Een huis waar bijzondere dingen gebeurd zijn toen hij zeven jaar oud was. Eenmaal daar aangekomen komen alle herinneringen weer naar boven. Op die boerderij wonen drie vrouwen, een kind, haar moeder en haar grootmoeder, die alle drie niet zijn wat ze lijken. Achter de boerderij ligt een vijver, maar de jongste van de drie noemt het haar oceaan.

Ondanks dat het in de ik-vorm wordt verteld door een jongetje van zeven, is dit boek alles behalve kinderachtig. Het heeft voldoende volwassen thema’s en Neil weet heel goed de balans de vinden tussen de naïviteit van de zeven jarige hoofdrolspeler en zijn 40 jaar oudere ik.

In eerste instantie komen er weinig fantasy-elementen voor, maar dat is een van Gaiman’s sterkste punten. Hij weet het de fantasy op een perfecte manier op te bouwen waardoor het lijkt alsof het er langzaam in sluipt zonder dat je het eigenlijk door hebt. Al met al is dit een boek dat je niet mag missen als je fan bent van Gaiman of van Fantasy!

Guilty pleasure.

Ik zag dit boek toevallig op de tafel liggen in de woonkamer. Mijn moeder had hem blijkbaar van een vriendin geleend. Ik bladerde het even door, en ik zag dat het maar 91 bladzijdes bevatte. Aangezien ik niets te doen had, besloot ik er meteen in te beginnen.

De eerste paar hoofdstukken waren al redelijk chaotisch. Zo was het eerste hoofdstuk niet echt een hoofdstuk, maar kon het beter de term 'Voorwoord' dragen. Het boek zelf is heel fragmentisch, en het enige vorm van onderscheid tussen deze fragmenten waren witregels. Dit is heel wat anders dan ik gewend ben in boeken, en het beviel me totaal niet. Nu lees ik heel weinig Nederlandse boeken, en Abdolah wordt ook wel een literaire schrijver genoemd. Het verhaal zelf kon me ook niet heel erg boeien. Al met al krijgt dit boek van mij niet meer dan 2 sterren.

Just won a Dutch translation of a book via a Goodreads Giveaways. So I'm one of the 5 people who get an ARC. I'm honored, although I don't really know if this is my kind of book. I'm going to read it ASAP and will post a review here.

When the game Metro 2033 came out a few years back, I played it for like an hour. I wasn't really good at it, and it had too much horror elements for my taste. Despite those reasons, I really liked the setting of the game. That post-acolyptic undergroundish envirnoment had something... intriguing. So, after I read a bit more about the game, I discovered it was based on a book.

Some time later, I came across the book in a bookshop. Without thinking, I bought it. I didn't start reading right away, but when I did, I was hooked.

I loved the way the world is described. That dense, dark world not bigger than Moscow, where all living people lived. Although some conversations were a bit long - some spanning multiple pages - it didn't bother me at all. Glukhovsky put some very interesting theories in these conversations. About (the meaning of) life, religion, the reason why people act the way they do, etc.

Although I loved the worldbuilding and conversations, something I still can't describe was missing. Something that was slowing my reading pace down. In the middle of the book I had to push myself to read further. That's why I gave it 4 stars, and not five.

I heard some great stories about the Discworld series, so last year I bought The Colour of Magic. I had a lot of other books on my TBR pile as well, so I just started with the book last week. I'm only halfway through, but I'm incredibly disappointed. A lot of people say that this book is one of the weakest of the Discworld-books, but I didn't knew it was that bad. It's just boring... So I'm putting it on hold for the moment, and will maybe pick it up later...
